What is the difference between Schedule 40 and Schedule 80?
Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 share the same outer diameter at each nominal size but differ in wall thickness. Schedule 80 has a thicker wall, resulting in higher pressure capacity and greater weight but a smaller internal bore. Schedule 40 is the default for most commercial and industrial applications; Schedule 80 is specified when higher working pressures are required.
Can galvanized pipe be used for gas lines?
Galvanized pipe is generally not recommended for natural gas distribution. Over time, zinc flakes can detach from the internal surface and clog gas regulators, valves, and burner orifices. Black steel pipe (ASTM A53 without zinc coating) is the industry standard for gas lines. Contact our team for the correct specification.

About Galvanized Steel Pipe
What Is Galvanized Steel Pipe?
Galvanized steel pipe is carbon steel pipe coated with a layer of zinc through a hot-dip galvanizing process. The zinc coating provides a dual-protection mechanism: first, a physical barrier that isolates the steel from moisture and oxygen, and second, sacrificial cathodic protection where zinc corrodes preferentially before the underlying steel. Even when scratched or nicked during transport, the zinc layer continues to protect exposed steel within approximately 6 mm of the damaged area.
According to ASTM A53, galvanized steel pipe is produced in two grades (A and B) and is used widely in water distribution, fire suppression, structural applications, and industrial piping systems. MetalFromTurkey supplies hot-dip galvanized steel pipe through certified Turkish mills with independent quality assurance at every stage — from raw material verification to pre-shipment inspection.
The base material is low-carbon steel conforming to ASTM A53. The most common production method is ERW/HFW welding, though seamless options are available for critical-service applications. The zinc coating is applied using a molten zinc bath of ≥ 98% purity per ASTM B6, creating a metallurgical bond between zinc and steel that outperforms any painted or spray-applied coating.
Hot-Dip Galvanizing (HDG) Process
Hot-dip galvanizing involves immersing prepared steel pipe in a molten zinc bath at approximately 450 °C, creating a metallurgical Zn–Fe alloy bond with an adhesion strength of approximately 3,600 psi. The process includes degreasing, acid pickling, rinsing, fluxing, zinc immersion, withdrawal/cooling, and final inspection.
The resulting coating consists of four distinct zinc-iron alloy layers: Gamma (Γ) with 75% Zn / 25% Fe and ~250 DPN hardness, Delta (δ) with 90% Zn / 10% Fe, Zeta (ζ) with 94% Zn / 6% Fe, and the outer Eta (η) layer of 100% pure zinc providing sacrificial cathodic protection. The Gamma, Delta, and Zeta layers are harder than the underlying steel itself — this is why HDG pipe resists handling damage during transport and installation.
HDG vs Electro-Galvanized vs Pre-Galvanized
| Feature | HDG (Hot-Dip) | Electro-Galvanized | Pre-Galvanized |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zinc thickness | 45–120 µm | 3–30 µm | 20–30 µm |
| Bond type | Metallurgical (Zn-Fe alloy) | Mechanical (electrolytic) | Mechanical |
| Service life (C3 urban) | 40–100 years | Months to years | 5–15 years |
| Weld seam coverage | Full — all surfaces | Full | None — weld seam bare |
| Lifecycle cost | Lowest | Highest | Medium |
| Best for | Outdoor, structural, water, fire | Appliances, aesthetics, indoor | Indoor HVAC, light-duty |
For outdoor, structural, and any wet-environment application, HDG is the standard. MetalFromTurkey supplies exclusively hot-dip galvanized pipe through dedicated HDG lines at our partner mills.

Compatible Fittings & Connections
Connection methods for galvanized steel pipe systems:
- Threaded (NPT) — Most common for NPS ½" to 4". Tapered threads per ASME B1.20.1 with thread sealant.
- Grooved (Mechanical) — Roll groove with gasket coupling. Faster installation, common in fire sprinkler and HVAC systems.
- Flanged — For large-diameter connections and where disassembly is needed. Standard facings per ASME B16.5.
When connecting galvanized pipe to copper or brass fittings, always install a dielectric union at the transition point to prevent galvanic corrosion. MetalFromTurkey can supply compatible fittings through our partner network.
Prohibited Uses
The following applications are not recommended for galvanized steel pipe:
- Natural gas lines — Zinc flakes can clog regulators, valves, and burner orifices. Use black steel pipe (ASTM A53 black).
- pH < 6 or pH > 12 environments — Zinc dissolves rapidly at extreme pH. Consider stainless steel pipe instead.
- Direct contact with copper/brass — Galvanic corrosion at the junction unless dielectric union is installed.
- Temperatures above 200 °C — Zinc produces toxic fumes at elevated temperatures. Use alternative coatings or alloy pipe.
Applicable Standards
All galvanized steel pipes we supply are produced and tested in accordance with these standards:
- ASTM A53 — Primary US/international standard for black and hot-dip galvanized welded and seamless pipe
- ASTM A795 — Fire sprinkler pipe — UL Listed / FM Approved (not interchangeable with A53)
- EN 10255 — EU standard for non-alloy steel tubes in Light, Medium, and Heavy series
- ISO 1461 — Hot-dip galvanized coating thickness requirements
- BS 1387 — Historical British standard, superseded by EN 10255 — still referenced by many international buyers
- DVGW — German gas and water certification — required for legal installation in Germany
All pipes are supplied with Mill Test Certificates per EN 10204 3.1 documenting chemical composition, mechanical properties, dimensional inspection, and zinc coating weight results.
