304 stainless steel pipe is the most widely used austenitic stainless pipe grade for general corrosion resistance, weldability and formability. It is a chromium-nickel stainless steel without intentional molybdenum addition, which makes it a practical choice for indoor food equipment, architectural pipework, utility lines and mild chemical process service. 304 is not the right answer for every environment. Where chlorides, salt air, de-icing salts or more aggressive cleaning chemicals are present, 316 or 316L may be a better specification.
