How to Read Aluminum Size Charts
Standard aluminum sizes use different measurement systems depending on form and market. Understanding which system applies prevents specification errors in RFQs and purchase orders.
Gauge vs Metric vs Imperial - A Quick Primer
Gauge is a numbering system used primarily in North America for sheet and plate thickness. Lower gauge numbers mean thicker material - 12 gauge aluminum is 2.05 mm, while 20 gauge is only 0.81 mm. Gauge is not an SI unit and is not used in metric markets.
Critical
The same gauge number does NOT represent the same thickness across metals. 12 gauge aluminum (2.05 mm) is thinner than 12 gauge mild steel (2.66 mm). Always verify the metal-specific gauge table before specifying.
Metric (mm) dimensions are standard in Europe, Turkey, the Middle East, and most international markets. Tubes, pipes, angles, and profiles are dimensioned in mm across all EN standards.
Imperial (inches) dimensions are standard in North America for ASTM-designated products. NPS (Nominal Pipe Size) adds another layer - NPS 2 does not mean 2-inch OD; the actual OD is 60.3 mm (2.375 in).

| Custom Profile | CCD up to 350 mm | Project-based | EN 12020-2, EN 755-9 |
Custom Extrusion - What Dimensions Are Possible?
Custom aluminum profiles are defined by the Circumscribing Circle Diameter (CCD) - the smallest circle that can fully enclose the profile cross-section. Turkish extrusion presses support CCDs up to approximately 350 mm. Minimum wall thickness is typically 1.0-1.5 mm, depending on alloy and profile complexity.
Precision profile note
Precision profiles per EN 12020 (tighter tolerances, approximately 0.7× of EN 755-9 tolerances) are available for alloys 6060 and 6063 only.

Sourcing Aluminum Products from Turkey
Turkey's aluminum extrusion industry produces over 600,000 tonnes annually, with EN and ASTM dual-compliance capability that serves both European and North American specification requirements.
MetalFromTurkey coordinates aluminum sourcing across multiple ISO 9001-certified partner mills in Turkey. This multi-mill approach allows buyers to access a broader size range than any single factory catalog - from standard profiles to custom extrusions with CCDs up to 350 mm.
Why B2B Buyers Use Consolidated Size References
Procurement teams comparing aluminum products across suppliers need dimensional data in one place - particularly when working across metric and imperial specification environments. This reference page supports that workflow, linking each size category to the relevant aluminum product pages where specific alloys, tolerances, and documentation packages are detailed.
All shipments through MetalFromTurkey include EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificates. Third-party inspection can be arranged before dispatch upon request.

How to Calculate Aluminum Weight Per Meter
Use the formulas below with dimensions in mm. All outputs are in kg/m. The standard aluminum density used is 2.71 g/cm³.
How to Calculate Aluminum Weight Per Meter: Product Form, Formula.
| Product Form | Formula |
|---|---|
| Round Tube | W = π × (OD - t) × t × 0.00271 |
| Square Tube | W = 4 × (A - t) × t × 0.00271 |
| Rectangular Tube | W = 2 × (A + B - 2t) × t × 0.00271 |
| Equal-Leg Angle | W = (2A - t) × t × 0.00271 |
| Flat Bar | W = Width × Thickness × 0.00271 |
| Round Bar (solid) | W = (π/4) × D² × 0.00271 |
| Sheet (per m²) | W = Thickness (mm) × 2.71 kg/m² |
Example: A 50 × 50 × 3 mm square tube weighs 4 × (50 - 3) × 3 × 0.00271 = 1.53 kg/m.
Density note
Actual alloy density varies slightly - 6063 is 2.69 g/cm³, 6061 is 2.70, and 5083 is 2.66. The value 2.71 is the industry-standard reference used across all weight calculations.

Sık Sorulan Sorular
What size does aluminum come in?
Aluminum sizes vary by product form. Sheet and plate range from approximately 0.14 mm (gauge 35) to over 200 mm thick. Round tubes span Ø6-300 mm outside diameter. Square tubes range from 10×10 to 200×200 mm. Angle bars cover 20×20 to 150×150 mm equal-leg. Extrusion profiles are custom-produced based on die design, with circumscribing circle diameters up to 350 mm.
Which is thicker - 16 gauge or 18 gauge aluminum?
16 gauge aluminum is thicker. At 1.29 mm (0.0508 inches), 16 gauge is approximately 26% thicker than 18 gauge at 1.02 mm (0.0403 inches). In the gauge system, lower numbers always indicate thicker material.
What is 12 gauge aluminum thickness in mm?
12 gauge aluminum is approximately 2.05 mm (0.0808 inches). This thickness is commonly used for heavy-duty enclosures, structural panels, and industrial fabrication.
What is the difference between aluminum pipe sizes and tube sizes?
Aluminum pipe is dimensioned by Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) with schedule-based wall thickness - designed for fluid and gas transport with wider tolerances. Aluminum tube is specified by exact outer diameter and wall thickness with tighter tolerances - used for structural, mechanical, and heat exchanger applications. For example, NPS 2 pipe has an actual OD of 60.3 mm, while a Ø60 tube means exactly 60.0 mm OD.
How do I calculate aluminum weight per meter?
Multiply the cross-sectional area in cm² by the aluminum density of 2.71 g/cm³ and the length of 100 cm, then divide by 1000 for kg/m. For round tubes, the simplified formula is W = π × (OD - wall thickness) × wall thickness × 0.00271, where both OD and wall thickness are in mm.
Can I source all these sizes from Turkey?
Turkey produces the majority of these standard sizes through ISO 9001-certified extrusion mills serving both EN and ASTM markets. Custom profiles with CCDs up to 350 mm are also available. Non-standard alloy and dimension combinations should still be confirmed at quotation stage for lead time and MOQ.
